At the annual tech summit, Qualcomm Technologies announced the flagship Snapdragon 888 5G chipset, which will power flagship Android phones in 2021. The Snapdragon 888 SoC has been launched as the successor to the Snapdragon 865 and the naming scheme is interesting here as the chipset was widely expected to be called the Snapdragon 875. Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 comes with a 3rd generation Snapdragon X60 5G Modem-RF system, thereby enabling global compatibility by offering mmWave and Sub-6 across all major bands worldwide. It has support for 5G carrier aggregation, global multi-SIM, standalone, non-standalone, and dynamic spectrum sharing.
The newly-launched Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC comes with the 6th gen AI Engine that brings a completely re-engineered Hexagon processor and is claimed to take a pivotal leap forward in AI compared to the previous generation to further improve performance at 26 tera operations per second (TOPS). The chipset also gets a 2nd gen Qualcomm Sensing Hub that incorporates lower-power always-on AI processing for intuitive, intelligent features. The 3rd generation Snapdragon Elite Gaming brings significant upgrades to Qualcomm Adreno GPU performance and with faster gigapixel Qualcomm Spectra ISP, the chipmaker says users can capture photos and videos at 2.7 gigapixels per second or roughly 120 photos at 12MP resolution—which is up to 35 percent faster than the previous generation.
Xiaomi confirmed that the upcoming Mi 11 will be one of the first flagships to use the Snapdragon 888 SoC
During the announcement of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC, Xiaomi confirmed that the upcoming Mi 11 will be one of the first phones to use the flagship chipset. ASUS, BlackShark, Lenovo, LG, Meizu, Motorola, Nubia, Realme, OnePlus, OPPO, Sharp, Vivo, and ZTE are also confirmed to launch phones with the Snapdragon 888 SoC. However, the timelines aren’t revealed just yet. More details about the Snapdragon 888 specifications are expected to be announced on Day 2 of the Qualcomm Summit.
