The smartphone market has taken a hit in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic across the globe. However, in some regions, the market seems to be slowly yet steadily on the recovery path. According to Counterpoint, the Indian smartphone market witnessed a record shipment in Q3 2020. A total of 53 million units were sold in the quarter in India, which is up by 9 percent YoY. The Rs 10,000-Rs 20,000 price range was responsible for the growth with the highest market share. OnePlus Nord was the best-selling phone under Rs 30,000 segment, while OnePlus 8 was popular in the affordable premium segment.

Counterpoint

Xiaomi finally lost its top position in Q3 2020 to Samsung. The Chinese company now has around 23 percent market share, down from 26 percent YoY. Samsung, on the other hand, jumped to 24 percent from 20 percent YoY. Overall, the company saw a 32 percent YoY growth spurt in India, while Xiaomi’s market declined by 4 percent. However, another firm, Canalys, refutes Counterpoint claims as it suggests Xiaomi has retained the top position with 26 percent market share in Q3 2020, while Samsung settled in the second position.

Vivo grew by 4 percent YoY and remained in third place, while Realme saw a 52 percent increase YoY in the mid-tier segment, thanks to Realme 6 and Realme 7. OPPO has recorded a 30 percent YoY increase in shipments. The feature phone segment has witnessed a 5 percent YoY growth in Q3 2020 with Itel being the number one brand followed by Samsung and Lava. Apple has led the premium segment, surpassing OnePlus, all thanks to iPhone SE 2020 and iPhone 11. The iPhone 12 is expected to strengthen the position in the upcoming quarter.
