  • Apple and Xiaomi smartphone imports have been severely affected due to India’s import regulations.
  • The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has been taking up to two months to process applications for consumer electronics like smartphones, tablets, laptops, and smartwatches.

India’s overly strict import regulations for electronic goods like smartphones have affected a slew of devices from OEMs like Xiaomi and Apple. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) usually processes applications within fifteen days of receiving them. That duration has increased up to two months in recent times. Notably, the brands that are now suffering due to these import regulations include Apple as the company’s devices are also manufactured in China. Reuters reports that over 1,000 applications for a plethora of consumer electronics have been waiting for a green light from BIS since as early as September.

The overly cautious approach from BIS has affected a slew of consumer electronic goods like smartphones, smartwatches, laptops, and tablets. These delays could not have come at a worse time, as companies would have been hoping to bank in on the festive season in the country to recoup some of the losses incurred throughout the year. Xiaomi and Oppo’s smartwatch business has been the most impacted by the delay, the report adds. A source familiar with the matter had the following to say:

While the BIS is delaying approvals for products like smartwatches, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is pushing companies to make these devices in India

These restrictions seem hardly surprising in the face of the Indian government’s backlash against Chinese-origin goods and services. It recently banned some more Chinese apps, bringing the total number of banned services to over 250. Although PUBG Mobile is slated to make a comeback soon, the same can’t be said for other popular apps like TikTok.
