A report by market research firm Counterpoint indicates that India’s TWS market witnessed a meteoric rise of 723 percent year-on-year in Q3 2020. With an increasing number of smartphones ditching the 3.5mm audio jack for wireless alternatives, it is obvious that the demand for Bluetooth-based headphones will go up. Indian based boAt seems to have steamrolled ahead of established players to capture 18 percent of the Indian TWS earbuds market. However, Xiaomi and Realme are hot on their heels with a market share of 16 percent and 12 percent, respectively. Despite its prohibitively high pricing, Apple’s AirPods (2nd Gen) have managed to stay on the top five TWS earbuds list with a 6 percent market share.

Despite boAt’s overall market dominance, its Airdopes 441 earbuds are only the second best-selling TWS on the market. The number one spot is occupied by Xiaomi’s Redmi Earbuds 2C, which seem to be a massive hit among Indian consumers thanks to their affordable price tag. Despite no new TWS releases in Q3 2020, Realme managed to occupy the third and fourth spot with its Realme Buds Q and Realme Buds Neo.
The second-generation AirPods come in fifth, presumably due to the coronavirus lockdown and consumers looking for reliable TWS earphones while working from home as well as the festive sale and discounts on the AirPods. Apple’s decision to not include wired earbuds out of the box with iPhone 12 models may also have helped bolster sales a little. boAt’s success is quite impressive, especially in the face of overwhelming competition from Chinese competitors this year.
