Reliance Jio has crossed 40 crore subscribers in India, with 35 lakh new customers added in July, according to data released by TRAI on October 12th. The overall telecom subscriber base had increased marginally to 116.4 crores in July from 116 crores in June. Mobile phone connections in the country increased to 114.4 crores in July from 114 crores in June, of which urban and rural connections stand at 61.9 crores and 52.1 crores, respectively. The fixed-line connections marginally have increased after several years to 1,98,20,419, with Jio taking the lead with 35.03 percent market share at 40,08,03,819 subscribers.

BSNL, MTNL, and private firms like Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices continue to decline in the fixed-line customer segment. Bharti Airtel and BSNL added 32.6 lakh and 3.88 lakh new mobile customers in July. Vodafone Idea (now called Vi) lost over 37 lakh customers, whereas MTNL had lost 5,457 mobile service customers. This is a huge decline for Vodafone Idea, which recently announced a new brand identity.

Broadband connections dominated the mobile segment with a growth of 1.03 percent to 70.54 crores in July from 69.82 crores in June.”Top five service providers constituted 98.91 percent market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of July,” TRAI report said. Jio has 40.19 crore broadband customers, Bharti Airtel 15.57 crore, Vodafone Idea 11.52 crore, BSNL at 2.3 crores, and lastly, ACT stands fifth with 16.9 lakh subscribers in July.
