In December 2020, Xiaomi announced that Mi 11 Ultra will be the company’s first flagship phone for 2021. Now, tipster Ice Universe has claimed via Twitter that Mi 11 Ultra will be the first device to use Samsung’s newly launched 50MP ISOCELL GN2 sensor. This sensor is a follow-up of last year’s GN1 and comes with bigger pixels and greater energy optimisation. This sensor uses a new PDAF technology named Dual Pixel Pro for better colours and details. To recall, Mi 11 Ultra will be the second model in Xiaomi’s flagship Mi 11 series; another model — Mi 11 Lite — is said to be in the offing.

SAMSUNG 50MP ISOCELL GN2 sensor: what’s so special?
Samsung 50MP ISOCELL GN2 sensor is a massive update to the ISOCELL GN1 and offers become faster and better than its predecessor. Its Dual Pixel Pro tech is claimed to reduce energy consumption by 24 percent, whereas staggered HDR solution will bring richer details and more vibrant colours than real-time HDR. As Samsung’s official website says, “Dual Pixel Pro technology utilises 100-million phase-detecting photodiodes that perceive phases both vertically and horizontally for faster and more accurate auto-focusing.”
In January 2019, Redmi Note 8 was first equipped with Samsung’s GN1 sensor and used the pixel-binning technique to capture 48MP shots. In the same series, Redmi Note 8 Pro was launched with a GW1 sensor, followed by Mi CC9 Pro with Samsung’s 108MP ISOCELL HMX sensor. Mi 11 Ultra will be one more name on this list.
