Amazon is all set to start manufacturing some of its products in India, starting with the massively popular Fire TV streaming sticks. Amazon is said to be working with Cloud Network Technology, a subsidiary of Foxconn in Chennai, as part of the India manufacturing effort. Production is slated to start later in the year. The company will produce ‘hundreds and thousands’ of Fire TV Sticks initially. There are even plans to set up additional manufacturing units in other cities should there be enough demand. The Amazon India manufacturing should result in some hefty discounts on Fire TV Sticks as they will no longer attract the prohibitively high import duties imposed on consumer electronics. Based on the popular response, we could even see locally-manufactured Alexa speakers and the likes soon.

Amit Agarwal, Global SVP and Country Leader for Amazon India had the following to say about Amazon’s endeavour: “Amazon is committed to partner with the Indian government to advance the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat. We have pledged to invest USD 1 billion to digitise 10 million small and medium businesses, help Indian businesses sell worldwide thereby enabling USD 10 billion in cumulative exports, and create additional 1 million jobs by 2025. This further reiterates our commitment to the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.”
Amazon is no stranger to the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Last year, it launched a new Made in India’ toy store to highlight local cultural artefacts and craftsmanship. Xiaomi, Samsung, and Apple are beginning to follow suit too. With the ever-increasing tariffs on consumer electronic goods like smartphones, it makes fiscal sense for OEMs to set up manufacturing units in India.
