  • Apple’s upcoming iPad Pro is expected to come with a mini LED panel.
  • The 12.9-inch variant will be the first in line to feature the technology
  • Other Apple products such as MacBooks and iMacs are expected to get mini LED screens soon

Rumours about Apple transitioning the iPad Pro from OLED to mini LED displays have been around for quite some time. A new report suggests that the upcoming iPad Pro may be the first of its kind to feature a mini LED panel. Once the iPad’ Pro’s transition is complete, MacBooks and iMacs are expected to follow suit. Interestingly enough, Apple has been tipped to source the mini LEDs for the 2021 iPad Pro from LG Display. It shouldn’t be long before other OEMs follow Apple’s footsteps and incorporate mini LEDs on their devices.

For those unaware, mini LED is a new form of backlighting for LCD panels that helps them offer increased brightness but there is a lower risk of screen burn-in. However, mini LED screens can match OLED panels in terms of power efficiency, peak brightness, and resistance to burn-ins. It is also significantly cheaper than corresponding OLED solutions, especially on larger devices like the iPad Pro. The first iPad to receive a mini LED refresh will likely be the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, with the 11-inch variant expected to follow suit soon. Other iPads, like the iPad Air and iPad Mini, may also receive a mini LED makeover in the not too distant future.

Apart from the alleged mini LED panel, the 2021 iPad Pro’s specifications include an A14X Bionic SoC, 5G connectivity, and a 120Hz screen. It is unlikely that Apple will make any significant design changes. The rear camera setup is likely to remain the same, but we may see some iPhone 12 features make their way to the tablet. It’ll be interesting to see what Apple has in store for us with the new iPadOS version, though.
