Qualcomm could soon venture into the gaming smartphone segment, according to a report from DigiTimes. The San-Diego-based chipmaker is reportedly partnering with ASUS to manufacture its first gaming smartphone, which is said to arrive at the end of this year. ASUS will be managing the hardware and design side of things, while Qualcomm will take care of the ‘industry design and “software integration optimising its Snapdragon 875 platform.” Qualcomm usually unveils its flagship chipset in December and OEMs will introduce products with it in the following year. But if the report is true, we might see a flagship phone rocking the chipset by the end of this year. The company has scheduled an event on December 1st and is expected to unveil the Snapdragon 875 on the stage.

Additionally, both the companies have said to come to an agreement for joint purchasing of components needed for both the ASUS ROG gaming phones, Qualcomm’s phones, including displays, batteries, camera modules, memory, and cooling solutions. What this essentially means is that the said gaming phones from Qualcomm may carry some elements from the ROG phone series. Both the brands are expected to manufacture around 1 million units a year — 500,000 for ASUS, while the other half for Qualcomm.
Qualcomm seems to be following NVIDIA by introducing its own line of products. Considering that ASUS has enough experience with the gaming phones, courtesy of the ROG series, it seems like a good pick for Qualcomm. Since we’re still around a couple of months away from the Snapdragon 875 SoC announcement, things might change and we suggest you take this report with a pinch of salt, for now.
