Samsung has been launching quite a few models in its Galaxy M series of smartphones this year, and the latest happens to be the Galaxy M51. Launched at a starting price of Rs 24,999, the device is positioned in the mid-range territory, unlike most of its siblings in the M series. The new smartphones face stiff competition from the likes of Realme and OnePlus. Here are my initial impressions about the Galaxy M51 from Samsung along with the unboxing experience.
The Galaxy M51’s box and packaging are pretty standard for an M series phone, though I had my hopes up for something extra considering the price tag. When one opens the box, the phone can be seen placed at the top, and underneath, there’s a charging brick and a Type-C to Type-C cable, just like the one bundled with the Galaxy M31s (review). There is the usual paperwork (warranty and startup guide), a SIM ejector tool and that is pretty much it. There are no earphones included, not even a case.
Moving on, I removed this hulk of a phone from the box, and immediately I could feel the weight in my hand. Amongst other things, the M51’s trademark feature is a class-leading 7,000mAh battery inside, which is frankly insane. I was impressed at how the device manages to keep the thickness in control while housing such a monstrous battery pack inside. From the in-hand feel to the materials used, it is clear that Samsung hasn’t skimped on the design part of the device. I have received the Celestial Black version for review and I could instantly see that the polished back is something akin to a mirror. On the front is a large punch hole for the selfie shooter but the bezels around the screen are relatively slim, so it does give a good viewing experience. My initial impressions about the huge 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display are quite favourable, as I had expected from a Samsung panel, and I will address it more in my full review.
The traditional L-shaped quad-camera housing, a staple for Samsung phones in almost all categories nowadays, is present on the Galaxy M51’s rear. Actually it is the same 64MP primary setup that’s available on the M31s complete with a 12MP ultra-wide lens, 5MP macro, and 5MP depth sensors. On the whole, I believe that you are likely to get great, contrasty, and slightly oversharpened photos with a healthy amount of dynamic range. The Single Take feature, which shoots different types of shots for a single scene in one take, is there too. As for the selfie camera, the same 32MP sensor has been carried over, which I think should make for some wonderful selfies even though some facial smoothing is likely to be thrown in. A full review is needed to dissect the camera features and photo quality.
Powering the M51 is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 730G chipset, supported by a maximum of 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage which can be expanded to 512GB. One probably can’t expect flagship-grade performance, though previous Galaxy M series phones have worked well as daily drivers. I see no reason why the Galaxy M51 cannot elevate that experience and I will take a closer look at it in the full review. The software aspect has remained similar on Samsung phones across different models. You get the OneUI 2.0 skin which is based on Android 10. Over the months Samsung has refined the UI to make it less heavy and more customisable. I expect more of the same on the Galaxy M51.
Well, the battery is where all the focus has been put, and it is easy to quite see why. I have never used a phone with a 7,000mAh battery, which sort of obvious given that this is the first smartphone in the country with that battery capacity anyway. Samsung has promised unbelievable amounts of media consumption on a single charge and I, for one, am very excited to check that out. The phone can also be used for wired reverse charging since basically it’s almost a power bank. There is a 25W charging support present as well.
