Apple is reportedly all set to start the production of its first-ever 5G iPhones in mid-September. The move is said to shorten the production delays to weeks rather than months. Apple has finally overcome the travel restrictions and other disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic to begin the production of its first set of 5G iPhone 12 models. As per a report by Nikki Asian Review, the manufacturing of 5G iPhones will start on a limited scale at first while mass production will begin by the end of September and early October. On Tuesday, Apple sent out invites for a launch event on September 15th. The launch event is unlikely to see the new iPhone 12 but rather the Apple Watch Series 6 and new-generation of iPads, and more.

5G iPhone production runs behind schedule
Apple is still behind its schedule as it usually starts mass production of new iPhones in August so as to be launched in September. However, the report adds that this is an improvement compared to the situation a few months ago.
The delays in the production could also mean that Apple will fall short on its yearly production target. The company has ordered components for up to 80 million 5G iPhones for 2020, however, the report notes that actual iPhones produced this year could be between 73 million to 74 million. The rest of the iPhones are deferred into early 2021.
The report adds that the company is looking to start the manufacturing of 5G iPhones with at least one model – the lowest-priced variant that will come with a 6.1-inch OLED screen and two rear cameras. The same model will account for around 40 per cent of the production orders Apple has placed, the report said.
Apple has also managed to gear up the production for new iPads to meet the healthy demand spurred by the coronavirus pandemic. Furthermore, the Cupertino giant is also looking to produce a new accessory known as Airtag that will allow users to track non-Apple devices. This will be similar to the Tile smart sensor that helps users to keep track of their belongings.
The report highlights that coronavirus-related travel restrictions have forced Apple to work remotely and the company has asked its suppliers to deliver the final samples to the US. To maintain secrecy, all items will be shipped with huge boxes. “This year this kind of secretive sample delivery increases a lot, but Apple is willing to spend as much money to protect its highly-confidential unfinished products,” the source told the publication.
The report adds that Apple’s suppliers and assemblers including Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron are currently gearing up in preparation for the production of the upcoming iPhones. However, the final date of starting the production for the four iPhones model will vary. Apple will launch four 5G iPhones this year with three different sizes, including 5.4 inches, 6.1 inches, and 6.7 inches.
